The Environment & Sustainability
Human health and our species’ long-term survival are inherently linked to the environment--to the quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the biological systems upon which we depend for sustenance. We must not consider the environment in the context of business—instead, business must be considered in the context of the environment in which we all live.
Commonweal Institute is committed to promoting the concepts of sustainability in business and social systems. Sustainability is mandatory if we are committed to the welfare of future generations. Sustainability implies achieving a balance between business and society as a whole.
The environment is also a matter of national security, if we define security as protecting our country and its people from harm. Global warming and other forms of environmental degradation are major threats to our nation’s health, economy, and future well-being. Numerous government policies, laws, and regulations impact our environment, directly or indirectly, which makes it vital that we understand the relationships between policy and the environment.
